A story coming out of Oklahoma, from Fox-23 is reporting that the Eastern Oklahoma Catholic Diocese, in particular a Bishop James Slattery is prepared to go to jail if need be to prevent the enforcement of a new Oklahoma law.
What law do you ask? A law that would prohibit illegal immigrants from living and working in the state.
Turns out Mr. Slattery is offering sanctuary to any and all who come his way and is even willing to go to jail to keep people from going home. Is it that he is helping wounded, dehydrated illegal’s who are fresh across the border? No, that would be our U.S. Border Patrol, who help thousands of invading individuals every year to make sure they are treated in a loving, caring manner.
Nope, turns out Mr. Slattery is taking the position that he would use his Catholic church to harbor fugitives. When you harbor a fugitive you are endorsing the behavior the fugitive is doing. There is no other way around that, matter of fact, the Catholic church has already had to apologize for endorsing another group of invading individuals in the ’40’s. What held true then, holds true now and if they were admittedly wrong then they are equally as wrong now.
But this news story gets worse. Mr. Slattery is claiming that if he goes to jail for harboring a fugitive that he wouldn’t be the first priest to go to jail for the Gospel. Mr. Slattery, I can assure you, you will not be going to jail for the Gospel, you will be going to jail for harboring a fugitive. Once the arrest warrant is issued he could always take notes from those he’s been helping and run across the Canadian border. You know, give him some real life experience and oddly enough, there he could actually go to jail for the Gospel. Perhaps Mr. Slattery is planning further criminal actions?
It’s people who don’t care about immigrants like Mr. Slattery who are making this whole immigration issue so hard in this country.
Now, here’s where this story takes an odd turn. Mr. Slattery is quoted as saying “I think people will begin to see that the law is not workable. Somebody will be victimized. I don’t think there are any winners at all in this legislation.” Yeah, it doesn’t make sense to anyone else either. Sir, the law is never workable when SOME people help other people to violate it. I know you don’t know anyone like that but believe me Mr. Slattery, there are people who will harbor illegal immigrants.
As for somebody getting victimized, you are right. The American people are losing property value, women are getting raped, thousands have been murdered, billions of dollars in medical expenses forced on the American public, crime among ILLEGAL immigrants is at 100%, so you are right Mr. Slattery, I’m sure nobody will get victimized. The other point that Mr. Slattery makes is equally as correct, there are no winners with this legislation, other than every single American and every single Mexican (who lives in Mexico).
If Mr. Slattery really cared about these fugitives he is harboring, he would instead focus his energy on possibly working with our brave men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol and hand out water to those trespassers who are in need. Matter of fact, what a great way to live out the Gospel. He could even hand out a tract for them to read on the truck ride back to Mexico. He could urge Catholics in both countries to unite and improve the standard of living in Mexico.
What Mr. Slattery doesn’t understand is that when hard working, able bodied men and women run from their country the real victim is the country they ran from. Help these people and stop hurting them Mr. Slattery.
