Summer is climate hype time. News reports are swirling with purported links between this summer’s warm temperatures and manmade climate change. The Economist magazine, in fact, actually featured climate change as its lead story this week and chimed, “this sweltering European summer would have been less than half as likely were it not for human-induced global warming.”
But according to NASA satellite measurements, global temperatures were warmer last year (including last summer) and the year before that in comparison to 2018 and this summer. We posted an analysis of attempts to tag this summer's heat as "climate change" at CFACT.org.
Yes, it turns out the scientific data shows that this year's summer is nothing special. Fortunately for the warming crowd it's been hot in Europe and North America where the people they want to tax are located. Unfortunately for them it's been cool elsewhere, and other years have been hotter.
This year’s attempts to trump up global warming fears are nothing new. The Green Left has been playing on people’s propensity to link whatever the weather is doing outside at the moment to their dire global warming prognostications for decades. Former Colorado Senator Tim Wirth was an early warming proponent. He told a now infamous tale to PBS about the big June 23, 1988 Senate climate hearing featuring James Hansen: Believe it or not, we called the Weather Bureau and found out what historically was the hottest day of the summer. Well, it was June 6 or June 9 or whatever it was, so we scheduled the hearing that day, and bingo: It was the hottest day on record in Washington, or close to it. It was stiflingly hot that summer. [At] the same time you had this drought all across the country, so the linkage between the Hansen hearing and the drought became very intense. … What we did it was went in the night before and opened all the windows, I will admit, right? So that the air conditioning wasn’t working inside the room and so when the, when the hearing occurred there was not only bliss, which is television cameras in double figures, but it was really hot. …
So Hansen’s giving this testimony, you’ve got these television cameras back there heating up the room, and the air conditioning in the room didn’t appear to work. So it was sort of a perfect collection of events that happened that day, with the wonderful Jim Hansen, who was wiping his brow at the witness table and giving this remarkable testimony.
Team warming now denies Wirth's account of leaving the Senate hearing room windows open. It's too late to deny Wirth's belief that using normal summer heat to hype warming was a dandy idea. As we wrote at CFACT.org: “Science is the enemy of global warming alarmists. And objective scientific data is that enemy on steroids.” For nature and people too, Craig Rucker, President of CFACT
